Also known as Indian ginseng or Indian winter cherry, ashwagandha is used in Indian traditional systems of medicine, namely Ayurveda and Unani. It is a stout shrub that reaches a height of about 170 cm (5 to 6 ft). The erect branched shrub is berry-like in shape and size and bears greenish or lurid yellow flowers and red fruits. The plant is grown in various parts of India like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. It is also cultivated in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Dosage And Different Forms In Which It Is Used:
Powder – 3-6 gm two or three times a day with milk or water.
Extracted Juice – 10-20 ml two or three times a day with sugar or honey or milk.
Decoction – 20-40 ml two times a day in the concentration of 1:2 (10 gm of bark in 20 ml of water)
Ksira Paka or Processed in Milk – 5-20 gm two times a day.
Extract – Upto 500 mg of 10:1 extract four times a day.
 
Medicinal Uses
  • Arjuna powder is specially indicated in fracture as it promotes healing. Because of this characteristic it is also recommended in osteoporotic changes in the bones
  • It is also recommended in skin rashes like those of Urticaria. 
  • It is a cardiac tonic. It increases the peripheral resistance by constricting capillaries which leads to rise in blood pressure.

Amaltas

Description :
This native of India, commonly known as Amaltas, is one of the most beautiful of all tropical trees when it sheds its leaves and bursts into a mass of long, grape-bunches like yellow gold flowers. A tropical ornamental tree with a trunk consisting of hard reddish wood, growing up to 40 feet tall. The wood is hard and heavy; it is used for cabinet, inlay work, etc. It has showy racemes, up to 2″ long, with bright, yellow, fragrant flowers. These flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. The fruits are dark-brown cylindrical pods, also 2′ long, which also hold the flattish, brown seeds (up to 100 in one pod) These seeds are in cells, each containing a single seed. A postal stamp was issued by the Indian Postal Department to commemorate this tree.

Medicinal Uses
1.The seeds of celery relieve flatulence, increase the secretion and discharge of urine and act as an aphrodisiac. They are tonic, laxative and stimulant. They treat spasmodic disorders. Celery is useful in the treatment of arthritis
2. The juice of celery in combination with carrot juice should be taken in the treatment of blood disorders. 
3. The seeds of celery are an effective remedy for indigestion. A teaspoon of the seeds soaked in a glass of buttermilk for 5 to 6 hours should be ground in the same buttermilk mixture. It gives relief from indigestion. 
4. The powder of the dried root of the herb is an effective tonic in general debility or weakness and malnutrition. One teaspoon of this powder mixed with a tablespoon of honey is taken twice daily in such conditions.
